From Curator Socks: The Scream is the best known and most frequently reproduced of all Edvard Munch’s motifs and the only painting in the world ever to become an emoji. The landscape in the picture is recognizable as the Kristiania Fjord seen from Ekeberg with expressive colours and flowing lines. Its central figure is an ambiguous creature (no one is sure about its gender or features) which has become a universal symbol of anxiety and one of the most iconic images of art. There are two paintings of The Scream and both have been stolen and returned in safety.
Edvard Munch created “The Scream” in 1893. Oil, tempera, pastel, and crayon on cardboard, 91 × 73.5 cm. Housed in National Gallery, Oslo, Norway.
